Derivative of tan x is sec 2 x
WebAnswer (1 of 5): \dfrac{d}{dx} \tan\,x = \dfrac{d}{dx}\left(\dfrac{\sin\,x}{\cos\,x}\right) =\dfrac{\cos\,x (\cos\,x) - (\sin\,x) (-\sin\,x)}{\cos^2\,x}\quad \text ... WebJust for practice, I tried to derive d/dx (tanx) using the product rule. It took me a while, because I kept getting to (1+sin^2 (x))/cos^2 (x), which evaluates to sec^2 (x) + tan^2 (x). Almost there, but not quite. After a lot of fiddling, I got the correct result by adding cos^2 (x) to the numerator and denominator.

WebThe point is to convert this trigonometric integral into the integral of a rational function, integrate that with partial fractions, and then convert back. We use the substitution u = tan ( x / 2), for which. sin x = 2 u 1 + u 2, cos x = 1 − u 2 1 + u 2, d x = 2 d u 1 + u 2.
